With no fewer than eight couples vying for our attention, Love Actually is like the Boston Marathon of romantic comedies, and everybody wins. Having mastered the genre as the writer of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, and Bridget Jones's Diary, it appears that first-time director Richard Curtis is just like his screenplays: He just wants to be loved, and he'll go to absurdly appealing lengths to win our affection. With Love Actually, Curtis orchestrates a minor miracle of romantic choreography, guiding a brilliant cast of stars and newcomers as they careen toward love and holiday cheer in London, among them the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) who's smitten with his caterer; a widower (Liam Neeson) whose young son nurses the ultimate schoolboy crush; a writer (Colin Firth) who falls for his Portuguese housekeeper; a devoted wife and mother (Emma Thompson) coping with her potentially unfaithful husband (Alan Rickman); and a lovelorn American (Laura Linney) who's desperately attracted to a colleague. There's more--too much more--as Curtis wraps his Christmas gift with enough happy endings to sweeten a dozen other movies. That he pulls it off so entertainingly is undeniably impressive; that he does it so shamelessly suggests that his writing fares better with other, less ingratiating directors. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Actual Love   August 24, 2010
KerinSM (boston, ma)
What can I say about one of my favorite movies?

The whole movie is comprised of several different love stories and scenarios each handling the idea of love and relationships in their own way. Each tie together in the end while referencing back to the opening scene. None of the relationships or connections seem contrived or forced even though some of the time the heartwarming cheese gets to you. It always does this in a seemlessly classy way though.

Also, the scene changovers and music choices are beautiful, each song gently tugs at your heart strings and emphasizes the movie's message.

The commentary that you can choose in the bonus material is also really interesting to listen to as you get another perspective from the directors and actors in the movie. I know that this seems very much like a "chick flick", but please give this movie a chance. My boyfriend also really loves this movie all you have to do is give this one a chance.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful movie   August 10, 2010

This purchase was a gift and it is one of my all-time favorite movies. The plots interact, some parts are fantasy and some painfully realistic, but it is all about every kind of love, and is thoroughly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Love It!   July 30, 2010
Tanya S. Ehrsam (Mount Pleasant, MI)
I love this movie, and the outtakes, some are better than the scenes in the movie. I laughed my but off, especially at bad Bernie who wrote a Christmas essay and wished that for one day you could see people's farts! It is a great movie, very cute. I watch it often and may even memorize it at some point. If I'd have been in the states when it came out, I would have paid full price for it. But I didn't learn of it until recently. Now I'm making up for lost opportunity and watching this movie often and much. Its great!

5 out of 5 stars Very good movie   July 13, 2010

I don't like to watch a movie more that once, or twice maximum. So it is a big deal that I saw it 3 times. This can be entertaining once in two years.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie   July 5, 2010
Kim P. Milner (WHITE LAKE, MI, US)
The best movie for the holidays if you love Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, and Keira Knightly, all in one movie!
